INDIAN NAVY DAY
Indian navy is a branch of Indian armed forces. It is Indian's primary instrument of sea power. President of India is the supreme commander of Indian navy.
NAVY DAY SIGNIFICANCE :
Navy day in India is observed on December 4th every year to celebrate the magnificence and achievements of Naval force to the country. It is celebrated to commemorate the courageous attack of Indian navy on Karachi harbor during Indo - Pakistan war on December 4th 1971. Maratha emperor Chatrapathi Shivaji was considered as the father of the Indian navy.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF INDIAN NAVY :
In 5000 years history of Indian nation, first naval coast was established in Mungrol of Gujarat in 2300 BC. First naval department was established at the time of Mourya dynasty.
When India was under the control of Britishers and when Britishers are ruling the country, they started 'British Indian navy'.By 1946 it consists of 2000 personnel and 78 ships. On January 1950, when India got independence, The British Indian navy was renamed as 'The Indian navy'. From then Vizag in the east and Mumbai in the west acts as the centres and service areas for Indian navy. Its becoming 50 years since the formation of service area in Vizag. so arrangements are being made for golden jubilee in 2018.
ROLE OF INDIAN NAVY :
Navy plays an important role in securing the marine borders of the country and enhance the international relation ships of India through sea port visits, joint exercises, Humanitarian mission, calamity relief. It played an important role in giving victory to the country in Indo - Pak war in 1971 and war in Goa with Portuguese in 1961.
STRENGTH OF INDIAN NAVY :
As on march 2018 Indian navy consists of 14 active Indian navy ships, 251 air crafts, 11 destroyers, 1 Air craft carrier, 1 Amphibious transport dock, 13 frigates, 22 corvettes, 2 nuclear submarines, 15 diesel sub marines, 29 patrol vessels and other Auxiliary vessels.
