major topics of discussion in the country. Of that Atrocities, Rape was considered as the fourth most common crime against women in india It was considered under section 375 of Indian penal code. According to the national crime records bureau (NCRB) 2013 annual records 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. According to NCRB 2015, Madhya -Pradesh has the highest raw number of rape reports against Indian states.
The Delhi student's death sparked protest across the country.In 2012 on December 16th , a 23 year old female physiotherapist internJyothi singh pandey from Dehradun stood by the side of the road looking out for bus at 9:30 pm on her way home from watching life of pie movie. Next what happens to jyothi singh physically sickens every one who has been obliged to listen to the details .she was beaten, gang raped and brutally assaulted in a private bus in which she was travelling with her friend awindra pratap pandey. There were six others in the bus including the driver .All of them raped the women, beat her friend and thrown them out from the moving bus .After that she was admitted in the south Delhi hospital .As her condition was serious she was transferred to a hospital in Singapore for emergency treatment at Mt. Elizabeth hospital, but she died from her severe injuries.
The incident generated wide spread national and international coverage and was widely condemned both in India and abroad .subsequently public protests against the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate security for women. since the Indian law does not allows the press to publish the rape victims name, the victim has become widely known as Nirbhaya meaning fear less. All the accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. There was one Juvenile and he was sent to imprisonment for 3 years .The remaining four who were found guilty of rape and murder were sentenced to death by hanging on March 13th 2014.
As the result of the protest a judicial committee was set up to study and take public suggestions for the best ways to amend laws to provide quicker investigation and prosecution of sex offenders. In 2013 criminal law amendment ordinance 2013 was promulgated by President Pranab Mukharjee. Several new laws were passed and six new fast tracks were created to hear rape cases.
Nirbhaya Act came in to force on 3rd April 2013 has stringent punishments to deal with sex crimes against women.

POCSO - Protection of children against sexual offence
This act was passed to strengthen legal provisions for the protection of children below 18 years from sexual abuse.
SPEEDY INVESTIGATION AND TRAIL :
1. Time limit for investigation of all the cases of rape has to be mandatory completed with in 2 months.
2. 6 months time limit was prescribed for disposal of appeals in rape cases.
RESTRICTIONS ON BAIL:
It has been provided that there will be no provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of rape of a girl under 16 years.
STRENGTHENING THE COURTS AND PROSECUTION:
1. New fast track courts will be set up in consulation with states, union territories and high courts.
2 .Special forensic kits for rape cases were provided to all police stations and hospitals
3. Dedicated man power will be provided for investigation of rape cases in a time bound manner.
PUNISHMENTS OF RAPE CONVICTS :
1. Minimum punishment for a convict in case of rape of a woman has increased from 7 years to 10 years imprisonment.
2 .In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, Minimum imprisonment has been increases from 10 years to 20 years or life imprisonment.
3. According to section 376 D IPC, if a woman was gang raped, that convict will be imprisoned for 20 years or of life.
4. Punishment for gang rape of a girl under 16 years will be life imprisonment.
5. Rape of girl below 12 years may lead to Death sentence of the convict.
6. During the rape, if the accused injures the woman so badly that she dies, then he can be given the death sentence or jail of 20 years.
7. Where a person is convicted for second time, then according to section 376 E of IPC, the law allows the death sentence for him.
